Brent Elementary School
Brent Elementary School is the first in the Nation to achieve SITES certification! SLD is proud to have partnered with the PTA, DCPS, DDOE, and DDOT to design and implement major improvements for this great school. SLD finalized conceptual designs, created permit and construction drawings and served as project manager for the redevelopment of Brent Elementary Schoolyard into a model learning environment. Significant improvements to the school grounds between 2006 and 2012 have created new opportunities for the children, teachers and parents at Brent Elementary School. Located on Capitol Hill - at 301 North Carolina Ave. SE in Washington, DC 20003 – over twenty thousand square feet of new landscaping, outdoor classrooms, walkways, seating areas, play equipment, safety surfacing and raingardens were installed.

A series of reports on how Green Infrastructure could improve the quality of life in Washington, DC and other urban areas. Developed by Casey Trees Endowment Fund based on input from a Blue Ribbon Panel on Green Infrastructure comprised of 20 National experts.

Sustainable Design Guide
Developed a Sustainable Design Guide for DC Parks And Recreation (DPR) to guide all building and land development activities in 2006. This initiative led to all new DPR buildings being LEED Silver, or better, and the development of new green building legislation for all Municipal District buildings.
Sustainable Classroom Study
Worked with then Dean William McDonough to create the Institute for Sustainable Design at the University of Virginia. This multi-disciplinary initiative connected various departments to focus on Sustainability and Regenerative Design. Led the Sustainable Classroom Study which developed protocols for healthy, regenerative learning environments.

Arlington Independent Media Station
Design Team Project Leader for interior renovation of the Arlington Independent Media Station in partnership with Cassatt Design. Improvements included significant reorganization of meeting rooms, offices, circulation and technical editing rooms.
Siena School
Created landscape design and provided construction administration for this private school in Montgomery County. Improvements included new outdoor gathering spaces, butterfly gardens, and stormwater management control.
Completed 2013
Key Elementary School
Developed Concept Plan for entire Schoolgrounds and worked with District School System, PTA, two engineering firms and Kadcon to redevelop the grounds. New improvements include significant regarding and retaining walls, innovative raingardens and other stormwater management improvements, new ADA accessible ramp, play areas, outdoor classroom and landscaping equipment.

Greenweigh Landscape Design
Private residence along the Potomac River. SLD created and installed numerous native and ornamental landscape improvements for this wonderful home and garden.
Capitol Hill Garden
Created landscape designs for the entrance gardens at this home on Capitol Hill and assisted with construction administration. Significant new hardscaping, seating area and plantings totally transformed this front yard.
Drake Landscape Design
Designed and installed new landscaping for this Arlington County home to integrate with the neighborhood and overall property. Improvements included new entrance sequence, art and plantings.
Eco-Machine Design Studies with Dr. John Todd
Worked on large and small scale Eco Machine Designs with John Todd in 1996 and 2013.
Current & Upcoming Projects
We recently received certification as the first school in the nation for our work at Brent Elementary School (see additional information at top of Gallery). We're also working on concept designs for Stoddert Elementary School, Green Roofs throughout the Mid-Atlantic and Designs for St. Paul's Episcopal Church and Grounds in Washington, DC.
